Weed is becoming ever more acceptable in the US. However, many companies have no policy when it comes to employees being stoned at work. Furthermore, as many of you will know weed can sometimes lead to bad decision making. This can have detrimental effects on the working environment. We take a look at what Lockton, the world's largest privately held insurance broker has to say about it.
As many as 60% of the American population now support the legalization of cannabis. This isn't only among younger people, with more and more over-55s not only accepting marijuana but actually using it to treat a variety of different conditions.
Any employer (and employee) should consider the following points in association to weed in the workplace.
- Would the off-duty use of marijuana affect an employee's ability to perform job duties?
- Managers should be able to spot someone who is under the influence of cannabis, particularly if it will affect their job.
- Is the drug a good fit for your company? For example, a company within the creative industry may not be worried about their staff getting slightly stoned at work
The effects of marijuana on an employee and their ability to work varies astronomically. It is therefore very difficult to say whether cannabis is going to affect the everyday running of your business. The most important thing is that if you're getting stoned at work, don't let it affect your work & if your job involves a lot of driving it is recommend that you don't smoke before it.
