It depends
The first thing that is important to note is that it depends completely on where you live. If you live in Mary land getting a MMC might be completely different to getting one in California. For the sake of easiness this article will be about getting a MMC in the state of California. If you want more information about how to get a MMC in different states you should have a look on google. The same methodology may apply to different states.
Getting a recommendation
As I mentioned before, most states will have the same kind of procedure. It is likely that every state will firstly require a recommendation from a doctor. This recommendation is simply a way for the dispensaries to know that your doctor thinks that medical marijuana will benefit you in some way. You obviously have to be over a certain age to get medical marijuana and this is another way to ensure that kids can't get their hands on it. Getting a recommendation is a fairly easy process and you can even do it online in some cases. Just go and see your doctor, or talk to one online, and tell them the problem you're having (Headaches, insomnia, anxiety etc) and they will issue you with a recommendation for medical marijuana. There is no special kind of doctor you need to visit. All physicians, osteopaths, and surgeons licensed to practice medicine in California can recommend marijuana for a patient. However, alternative doctors (chiropractors, herbal therapists etc do not have the ability to issue you with a recommendation)
Getting a MMC
Once you've gotten your recommendation from a licensed physician the next stage is to find your local health department and go there with the following documents:
- A copy of your doctor’s recommendation
- A filled out Medical Marijuana Program Application/Renewal Form
- Proof of identity (California driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID)
- Proof of residency (rent/mortgage agreement, utility bills, or California vehicle registration)
You will be expected to pay a fee at this point in the application. After you've submitted the application you will have to wait around 30 days for the state to verify your application. Once you're issued with your MMC it is valid for one year and allows you to legally get medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary.
