A backcross is where you breed an individual clone with its progeny. It could also be called interbreeding, but of course, this term has bad connotations in human language.
An example of backcrossing is:
step 1) A X B = F1
step 2) A X F1 = BC1
step 3) A X BC1 = BC2
step 4) A X BC2 = BC3
The reason for backcrossing is to add a specific train of interest which the current parent lacks. Let's say that you want a very strong mind high but also one which gives a non-couch lock high. Unfortunately, your favorite strain has a very nice cerebral high but it also glues you to your couch. This is where backcrossing comes in. You would breed the original plant with a donor plant to create the perfect high. The basic principle to follow is that any time a generation is crossed to a previous generation, it is a form of backcross breeding
