Is weed actually a weed?

One of the many street names for cannabis is weed. But can the marijuana plant be classified as a weed? What is the technical definition of a weed? A 'weed' is defined as a plant growing in a place where it is not wanted, usually in competition with cultivated plants. If a farmer is trying to grow a field of potatoes and he finds anything growing in his field that he hasn't planted, then it is classified as a weed. Cannabis plants do grow in the wild. That means that, in certain places in the world, cannabis could actually be considered a weed. I am currently researching where these places are so I can go and live there.
